JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Residents in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and North West are set to face water supply disruptions this weekend as Rand Water and Eskom proceed with the second phase of their planned infrastructure maintenance.
The maintenance is scheduled to start at 7 am on Friday and conclude at 7 pm on Sunday, following the completion of the first phase from 29 May to 2 June. Eskom’s maintenance work on electrical infrastructure at Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Purification Plant, along with the completion of cross-connections from old to new pipelines, is part of the ongoing efforts. During the maintenance period, Rand Water’s pumping capacity across systems will be reduced, with the Palmiet system operating at 78% capacity, the Zwartkopjes system at 50%, and the Eikenhof system at 55%.
The Mapleton system will have its pumping suspended for 12 hours. Rand Water has issued a 21-day notice to affected municipalities, industries, and direct customers, allowing time for contingency planning and minimizing potential disruptions.
The Gauteng Provincial Government has been coordinating interventions to address ongoing water supply challenges, which include aging infrastructure, high demand, leaks, power supply interruptions, and maintenance backlogs.
The City of Johannesburg, Mogale City Local Municipality, Rand West City, and Merafong are among the areas expected to be affected. Residents are advised to prepare for water cuts and low pressure, and to stay informed about the progress of the maintenance work.
The goal is to minimize the impact on the affected areas and restore a stable water supply as quickly as possible. KICKER: As Rand Water and Eskom work to complete the maintenance programme, residents are encouraged to conserve water and be prepared for potential disruptions in their water supply.
