Nakuru — Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has refuted claims that his administration released 33 unclaimed bodies for disposal in Kericho, emphasizing that only 13 bodies were handed over for burial. Nyaribo explained that the county government allocated Sh38,000 to facilitate the burial process, but accused the designated official of not adhering to legal procedures. He alleged the official colluded with others in Kericho to unlawfully bury the bodies at Makaburini Cemetery, which contravened established protocols.
The governor confirmed that the officer responsible is one of two individuals arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for the incident. Nyaribo strongly denied the 33-body claim, describing it as inaccurate. Additionally, post-mortem examinations on eight exhumed adult bodies from a mass grave at Makaburini indicated that two individuals died due to blunt force trauma, prompting further inquiries into the burial process.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities aim to establish the handling of the bodies and ensure compliance with proper procedures.
Governor Nyaribo’s administration has faced scrutiny over the handling of unclaimed bodies, with this incident adding to existing concerns. The issue of unclaimed bodies in Kenya has been a matter of public concern, with some critics arguing that authorities need to establish clearer guidelines for the disposal of such remains.
