Durban, South Africa — Toyota South Africa Motors has reached a significant milestone in its 10. 4 billion rand ($634 million) investment aimed at producing the next-generation Hilux pickup truck.
The project, which is over 77% complete, is a testament to Toyota’s confidence in South Africa’s automotive industry amidst global challenges.
The automaker has commenced pilot production at its Durban facility, with the project expected to be fully operational by June 2027. Andrew Kirby, CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, emphasized the investment’s significance, highlighting the company’s unwavering commitment to South Africa.
The investment package includes 3. 2 billion rand for factory upgrades, such as a new logistics center and a chassis treatment and coating facility.
Additionally, 7. 2 billion rand has been allocated for advanced robotics, manufacturing equipment, and supplier tooling to support the new Hilux’s production.
The new Hilux is set to be a key player in Toyota’s global market, with the Durban plant expected to produce around 140,000 units annually for both domestic and international markets, including Europe and Africa.
The investment aligns with the global automotive industry’s push for modernization in response to stricter emissions regulations and evolving consumer preferences. Toyota’s latest Hilux is equipped with enhanced driver-assistance features and safety technologies, reflecting the company’s response to the intensifying competition in the pickup segment.
The investment also bolsters South Africa’s position as Africa’s largest vehicle manufacturing hub and a crucial exporter to Europe. This latest move by Toyota is part of a broader trend of automotive investment in South Africa, as the country works to attract fresh industrial investment and reposition its supply chains.
The Durban facility’s role in Toyota’s global automotive value chain is expected to support thousands of jobs across the manufacturing and component supplier sectors.
