Brazil Boosts Food Security Efforts in Namibia with USD120,000 Contribution to WFP WINDHOEK, Namibia – The Government of Brazil has extended its commitment to food security and sustainable agriculture in Namibia by contributing USD120,000 (NAD 1. 97 million) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This substantial donation aims to enhance food and nutrition security across Namibia, targeting particularly vulnerable regions.
The partnership between Brazil and the WFP in Namibia has been in effect since 2019, marked by Brazil’s steadfast support that has surpassed USD 2 million in combined funding and in-kind assistance.
The new funding will benefit over 1,000 individuals and is designated to support five Integrated Food Systems Projects in key regions, including Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Hardap, Kunene, and Ohangwena. These projects are strategically located within school and health center environments, acting as local food production hubs. They focus on horticulture, poultry farming, and livelihood activities, aiming to strengthen access to nutritious food while empowering communities with the skills and knowledge necessary to withstand climatic and other shocks.
Officials commented on the matter. “This approach ensures long-term sustainability and self-reliance. “.
The Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) has played a crucial role in this partnership, offering technical expertise and knowledge sharing alongside the financial support.
In Tsumkwe, Gobabis, Stampriet, Opuwo, and Olukula, WFP Food Systems Programmes have been instrumental in improving productivity, combating hunger, and supporting smallholder farmers. Ambassador Pedro de Castro da Cunha e Menezes, Brazil’s representative in Namibia, highlighted the broader impact of this partnership. “Our goal is not simply to provide resources but to support people in becoming self-reliant through stronger agriculture, better nutrition, and opportunities that create lasting food security for future generations. “.
The continued collaboration between Brazil, WFP, and the Government of Namibia represents a model of international cooperation in the fight against hunger and food insecurity, offering a beacon of hope and a pathway forward in the face of global challenges such as climate change.
