PORT — GENTIL, Gabon (AGP) – In a significant move towards economic sovereignty and urban transformation, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema embarked on a two-day visit to the Ogooué-Maritime province on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The visit, marked by a packed schedule, began with the inauguration of the Ngongui oil field in Gamba, the first step of his journey.
The Ngongui field, with an estimated reserve of 350 million barrels, represents a pivotal moment for Gabon. It is the first oil field to be brought into production under the Fifth Republic, signifying a shift towards greater control over natural resources. This follows the strategic acquisition of the Assala company in June 2024, which aimed to strengthen national control over the energy sector. The field’s operation is expected to boost the national production by 10,000 barrels per day, reaching a total of over 60,000 barrels daily, reinforcing the energy sector’s role in sovereignty, growth, and job creation.
In a tribute to the late Mahotès Magouindi, a revered figure in the area, the President engaged with local authorities, emphasizing their role in maintaining social cohesion. The following day, in Port-Gentil, the economic capital of Gabon, the President focused on urban modernization and infrastructure development. Field visits evaluated the progress of key projects, including the upcoming cultural center and Socoba site, symbolizing industrial renewal.
The improvement of the road network was a priority, with inspections of several routes, including the section between Bornave and Miniprix intersections, and roadwork near the SEEG. These efforts aim to provide Port-Gentil with infrastructure suitable for a developing economy. The President concluded the day by reviewing the comprehensive urban development plans, reminding oil industry operators of their national development responsibilities. He emphasized the need to strengthen local employment, skill transfer, national subcontracting, and the construction of critical infrastructure.
This presidential tour underscores the President’s commitment to transforming Gabon into a sovereign, industrialized nation engaged in inclusive and sustainable development.
