N’Djamena, Chad – April 2026 The food security situation in Chad is deteriorating sharply, with a significant portion of the population facing severe hardship.
According to the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS NET), Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes are expected to persist through September 2026 in eastern departments such as Ouaddaï, Sila, Wadi Fira, and Ennedi-Est, where there are high concentrations of refugees.
The influx of over 1. 5 million refugees, including 900,000 from Sudan, has exacerbated the country’s already strained resources and economic stability. These refugees are heavily dependent on local markets, yet they face substantial deficits in food consumption due to limited income-generating activities and the soaring prices of imported food commodities.
While access to food assistance is somewhat mitigating these deficits, the situation is critical, with fewer than 15 percent of households at risk of falling into Emergency (IPC Phase 4) conditions.
In the Lac Province, persistent insecurity and displacement are impeding access to livelihoods for both displaced persons and poor host communities.
The central and Sudanian zones of Chad are expected to see Stressed (IPC Phase 2) conditions persisting through September, as food stocks deplete rapidly and incomes are insufficient to cover basic non-food needs.
However, households will maintain minimally adequate food consumption through in — kind payments from agricultural labor.
The Chadian government estimates that the Middle East conflict poses limited risks to food supply in Chad, but the oil price shock and high fuel prices could affect transport costs, imports, and household purchasing power, exacerbating the food access challenges for poor households, particularly during the lean season.
In response, the government, with support from the World Bank, WFP, and other partners, has initiated a national emergency response plan to meet the immediate food and nutrition needs of one million of the most vulnerable people across eight provinces. Despite these efforts, the international community’s support is crucial to prevent the crisis from deepening.
