CITY, DRC — The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is addressing its 17th Ebola outbreak, with over 1,700 confirmed cases of the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) as of 09 July.
The situation report by the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) and Logistics Cluster highlights the ongoing telecommunications efforts to support the humanitarian response.
The Ebola BVD outbreak has placed significant pressure on surveillance, coordination, and information management.
In response, the Logistics & Telecommunications Cluster (LTC) Telecoms and the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) have restored a dedicated UN security communications channel in Bunia, which had been inactive for six months. This restoration is crucial for enhancing security communications for responders operating across Ituri.
Furthermore, LTC Telecoms has initiated a partner connectivity mapping exercise. This exercise aims to identify existing and planned satellite connectivity deployments supporting the Ebola response. It is designed to pinpoint coverage gaps, prevent duplication, and prioritize telecommunications support in affected areas.
Partners are encouraged to complete the survey promptly to facilitate timely analysis and coordination.
The situation underscores the critical role of reliable telecommunications services in an effective response to the Ebola outbreak, particularly as the disease continues to expand its reach.
