KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO — The Health Cluster reports a rapid escalation in the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as of May 20, 2026. With 64 confirmed cases and six deaths, the epidemic has primarily impacted the Ituri region, which remains the epicentre with 60 confirmed cases.
The ZS of Bambu has reported its first case, raising the number of affected zones to five.
In response, a 100-bed Excellence Treatment Centre is scheduled to become operational on May 25, 2026, in CME Nyakunde (ZS Rwampara), a joint venture between the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO).
A WHO — DPS joint team has been deployed in Mongbwalu to support coordination and center setup, with assistance from MSF.
A suspected case of EVD was identified in the LWIRO health zone in the Miti Murhesa zone of South Kivu. Samples have been collected and transported to the INRB Goma laboratory.
The individual had a history of staying in the Ituri province. This situation highlights the critical need for an effective and coordinated response to the outbreak, which must be underpinned by robust healthcare systems and international support.
