BOKSBURG, South Africa — The Ekurhuleni Metro’s Council has concluded that the legal proceedings involving Municipal Manager Kagiso Lerutla are a “personal matter, “according to Municipality spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe. Despite this classification, the Council has indicated that it will continue to monitor the court proceedings. Lerutla, along with suspended EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi, faces charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
They are accused of paying a third party approximately R400,000 to impersonate Lerutla in court during a 2019 speeding charge appearance. Both are currently on bail of R30,000 each.
The Council’s stance comes amidst the ongoing legal saga, which has raised questions about the suitability of Lerutla’s appointment and his ability to perform his duties effectively. Despite the Council’s assertion that the court case is a personal matter, the implications of the charges remain a point of concern for the public and legal experts.
