Gabon’s Fisheries Sector Urges Legal Reforms, Minister Announces. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — Aimé Martial Massamba, the Minister of Fishery, Marine, and Blue Economy, has emphasized the need for comprehensive legal reforms within the country’s fishing industry. Speaking during a recent episode of “Le Gouvernement s’exprime “on Gabon 24, Massamba highlighted the outdated nature of current laws, which he believes no longer align with the evolving needs of the sector or national stakeholders.
Officials commented on the matter. He pointed to the maritime corridor opening legislation as an example, which he claims is currently limiting the capabilities of Gabonese fishermen to make multiple catches along national coasts. Massamba argued that adapting these rules is essential to better support local production.
To address these issues, the minister announced that he will soon submit four draft decrees and seven decrees to the government aimed at modernizing maritime governance. He also mentioned the importance of addressing personnel and training concerns within his department to effectively implement these reforms.
Furthermore, Massamba indicated that ongoing discussions in the fishing agreements between Gabon and the European Union reflect the state’s commitment to making the fishing industry a key driver of economic diversification.
The minister’s statements come as part of a broader push for legal and structural changes within the sector, reflecting the government’s aim to ensure sustainable and efficient fishing practices in Gabon. Further details are expected as the government considers the proposed reforms.
