Gabon Introduces Limited WiFi Access in Trains via WhatsApp. Libreville, Gabon — The Gabonese Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation announced on December 15, 2025, that the initial phase of free WiFi in passenger train wagons will be restricted to the use of WhatsApp. This initiative, effective from December 23, 2025, is part of the comprehensive “One Web “solution being implemented in partnership with the Transgabonais Railway Company (Setrag) and Airtel Gabon, with support from the Ministry of Transport, Merchant Marine, and Logistics.
According to the official communiqué, the measure aims to enhance passenger comfort and boost the attractiveness of rail travel through the progressive integration of digital services.
The expansion to other applications and uses will be considered based on technical performance and observed quality.
The official launch on December 23 will feature a presentation of the solution and a real-time connection test aboard the train.
The government’s decision to limit internet access to WhatsApp is seen as a strategic move to promote digital inclusion and ensure a seamless user experience. Regional officials confirmed that the choice of WhatsApp was made due to its widespread adoption and ease of use, which aligns with the government’s goal of bridging the digital divide.
The “One Web “project is part of Gabon’s broader digital transformation strategy, which seeks to leverage technology to improve public services and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
The initiative is expected to contribute to the growth of the digital economy and foster innovation within the country. Further details regarding the expansion of services and the long-term impact of the “One Web “project are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. For now, the government remains focused on ensuring a successful launch and assessing the feasibility of extending the service to additional platforms.
