Gabon’s RPM Condemns Sylvia Bongo’s France 24 Comments. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — 11 March 2026 (AGP) – The Rassemblement pour la patrie et la modernité (RPM), a member of Gabon’s ruling majority, has strongly criticized statements made by former First Lady Sylvia Bongo Ondimba on France 24. During a press conference in Libreville on Wednesday, the RPM expressed its disapproval, calling the comments “defamatory, “as reported by the Gabonese Press Agency.
According to RPM spokesperson Pr Pierre Ndong Méyé, Bongo Ondimba’s remarks suggest a desire to avoid justice amidst accusations against her. Méyé accused the former First Lady of attempting to victimize herself, ignoring her past actions and implying that the Gabonese people have forgotten them. He added that Bongo Ondimba, who was released on humanitarian grounds in May 2025, has failed to face her country’s justice system as she had vowed to do.
Officials commented on the matter. Méyé also highlighted the advancements made under the Fifth Republic, including infrastructure projects and efforts to clean up public finances.
In an interview with France 24 on 6 March 2026, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba claimed she and her son, Nourredin Bongo Valentin, were tortured following their arrest after the 30 August 2023 coup attempt.
Further details are expected regarding the ongoing situation.
