Libreville, Gabon — In a move that underscores the commitment to enhancing political and economic relations, Gabon and Spain have recently signed a series of agreements aimed at fostering deeper cooperation.
The agreements were signed on July 17, 2026, in Madrid, during a visit by Gabon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Marie-Édith Tassyla-Ye-Doumbeneny, who was invited by her Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares.
The cornerstone of the agreement is the establishment of a regular diplomatic consultation mechanism between the Foreign Ministries of both countries. This framework is designed to provide a structured and operational platform for the two nations to engage on various issues and deepen mutual understanding.
The signing ceremony, which took place at the Palacio de Viana, the protocolary seat of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, reflects a shared desire between Gabon and Spain to structure their political dialogue more effectively. Following the ceremony, the two ministers participated in a working lunch that focused on the state of bilateral cooperation and future prospects, including discussions on economic strengthening, sustainable tourism, education, maritime security, mobility, and opportunities under the Spain-Africa 2025-2028 Strategy.
The importance of economic cooperation was emphasized, with a particular focus on leveraging the Gabonese National Investment Promotion Agency (ANPI-Gabon) and its director general, Ghislain Moandza Mboma, who was part of the delegation. Discussions also touched upon the creation of a Gabono-Spanish Business Council to facilitate closer engagement between private sectors of the two countries.
On the sidelines of the official visit, ANPI — Gabon’s representative engaged with Spanish company INDRA, which specializes in digital transformation, technology, security, transportation, defense, and digital solutions. This engagement presented potential axes of cooperation that could further strengthen economic ties. Both nations recognized the historical quality of their relations and acknowledged the need to enhance economic cooperation, which they believe has not yet reached its full potential.
The visit and agreements are seen as a significant step towards achieving this goal.
The future of Gabon — Spain relations is poised to be shaped by the implementation of these agreements and the outcomes of ongoing dialogues and collaborations. Both countries are optimistic about the potential for mutual benefit and the contribution to the broader development of Africa.
