ACCRA, GHANA — The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the immediate termination of head coach Otto Addo on Monday, effective 72 days before the start of the FIFA World Cup. The decision followed a series of setbacks, including a defeat in a friendly match against Germany, marking their fifth consecutive loss in such encounters.
The GFA provided no additional details regarding the reasons for Addo’s departure or the naming of a replacement. Addo, a German-born former Borussia Dortmund player, took over the senior men’s national team in March 2024, following his involvement with the Black Stars’campaign at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana exited at the group stage.
Under Addo’s guidance, Ghana secured their place in the upcoming World Cup in North America, set to kick off on June 17 with their opening match against Panama in Toronto. The team is placed in Group L, alongside Croatia and England. Despite this qualification, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, marking their first absence from the regional competition in 21 years.
