JOHANNESBURG — In a significant development in the Emfuleni corruption scandal, the Political Killings Task Team has apprehended Janitha van Reenen, who is accused of defrauding the municipality of over R400,000. She is now a central figure in the investigation into the assassination of whistleblower Martha Mani-Rantsofu. Van Reenen informed the police that she could identify the killers of Mani-Rantsofu, who was a finance clerk at the Emfuleni Municipality.
Mani — Rantsofu was shot outside a tyre shop in March after uncovering a paper trail that revealed the municipality’s embezzlement of R16 million. Facing schedule 5 offences, van Reenen was required to demonstrate to the court why she should be granted bail.
However, the magistrate deemed her a flight risk and a potential interference with the ongoing investigations, resulting in her continued detention.
The case has been adjourned for further investigation, with a new court date set for 23 June.
