MONROVIA, Liberia — A series of catastrophic fires swept through five Liberian counties between 24 and 28 March 2026, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement. The fires, which raged across Grand Cape Mount, River Cess, Margibi, Nimba, and Montserrado, impacted 1643 individuals from 234 households.
In the aftermath, 61 houses were destroyed, with 41 completely lost and 20 partially damaged. The loss of homes and essential belongings, including clothing, bedding, and cooking utensils, has left many families without a place to call home and without the means to sustain themselves.
The fire incidents have not only caused immediate hardship but have also disrupted the livelihoods of the affected communities. Many displaced families have been forced to seek shelter with host families and rely on already strained community resources. This situation underscores the vulnerability of local housing structures and the critical need for enhanced fire prevention and preparedness measures at the community level.
Paragraph: The Liberian Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations are working to provide relief to the affected families. The scale of the disaster highlights the urgency for improved fire safety infrastructure and community-based fire prevention strategies to mitigate future risks and protect the lives and property of Liberians.
