LIBREVILLE, Gabon — The Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) held its VIIIème Session ordinaire du Comité technique spécialisé sur la Défense, la Sûreté et la Sécurité (CTSDSS) in Libreville, Gabon, from July 21 to 24, 2026.
The meeting aimed to assess the implementation of recommendations and decisions from the Conference of Heads of State and to address the evolving security challenges in the region. Luis Assumu Mba Medja, representing Equatorial Guinea, which currently holds the presidency of the CEEAC, opened the session. He expressed gratitude to the Gabonese authorities for the excellent organization of the event and highlighted the need for regional responses to the increasingly complex security issues facing the CEEAC member states.
The session featured a segment of experts who were tasked with examining draft texts before they are presented to the Segment of Chiefs of General Staff and then to the Central African Peace and Security Council (COPAX) for review and adoption. Marcel Mapangou Moussadji, the Commissaire aux Affaires politiques, Paix et Sécurité of the CEEAC, commended Gabon for hosting the session and noted the importance of the upcoming presidential election in São Tomé and Príncipe as a testament to the region’s democratic vitality. Freddy Nze Ekekang, Commissaire général à l’Intégration régionale of Gabon, emphasized the critical moment for the sub-region, which is facing complex security threats such as terrorism, cross-border crime, and maritime piracy.
He also mentioned persistent health threats, including the resurgence of deadly hemorrhagic fevers and chronic diseases like malaria, compounded by instability, porous borders, and fragile health infrastructure.
The session provided an opportunity for member states to discuss common challenges and opportunities, with Chad’s participation reflecting its commitment to regional security and economic integration.
The outcomes of the session are expected to contribute to a more stable and prosperous Central Africa, with the CEEAC continuing to work on initiatives to improve regional security and economic integration.
