In a poignant celebration of musical heritage, the Massako Orchestra is set to perform a concert on April 17th at the Institut français du Gabon (IFG) in Libreville. The concert, which marks the orchestra’s tribute to its founder, the late artist Mackjoss, is poised to be a significant cultural event as per a press release received by the Agence gabonaise de presse.
The concert, which is a testament to the enduring legacy of Mackjoss, is part of a broader initiative. From April 13th, the orchestra will be in residence at the IFG, where it will engage in a creative residency. This residency is a collaborative effort with the renowned Congolese musician Freddy Massamba, a founding member of the Tambours de Brazza. Massamba, known for his exceptional arrangements, has collaborated with several prominent figures in African music, including Manu Dibango, Ray Lema, Mory Kanté, and Salif Keita.
The French Institute of Gabon has initiated this residency, which is focused on revisiting the orchestra’s repertoire. The reimagined works, which are set to be performed at the concert, are expected to showcase an exceptional blend of tradition and contemporary music. The concert will also feature a brass section, adding a new dimension to the orchestra’s sound.
This project is not only about celebrating the past but also about the transmission and reappropriation of musical heritage. The Massako Orchestra, founded by Mackjoss, who was known by his real name Jean-Christian Mboumba Mackaya, is a cornerstone of Gabonese music. As an orchestra national from 1978 to 1986, it achieved numerous successes and left an indelible mark on the nation’s musical landscape.
Looking ahead, the orchestra has its sights set on an international tour planned for France and Europe by 2027. This tour is inspired by the global reach of esteemed African orchestras like the Orchestra Baobab. The organizers of the upcoming concert believe that it will highlight a vital aspect of Gabon’s sound heritage, bringing it to the forefront of contemporary music stages.
