Casablanca, Morocco — In a swift response to the escalating threat of online incitement, Moroccan police have apprehended an individual in the Hay Mohammedi district of Casablanca. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody following the dissemination of a series of videos on social media platforms. These videos depicted the suspect openly inciting violence against individuals of various religious backgrounds and threatening to commit acts of violence using a variety of weapons.
The police investigation, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), revealed the suspect’s mental health issues, prompting authorities to refer him to the psychiatric department of the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca. There, he is undergoing comprehensive mental and psychological evaluations to determine the extent of his condition and the potential risks he poses to society.
The incident underscores the ongoing efforts by Morocco’s security services to monitor and address violent content online. Social media has emerged as a key battleground in this effort, with numerous videos having been identified as potential threats to public safety. The Moroccan police have reported a 10% decrease in violent crimes in the country over the past year, attributing this in part to their intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks specializing in violent offenses.
In its annual report, the Moroccan police noted the dismantling of 1,112 such networks and the prosecution of 779,008 criminal cases, including 415 individuals for cybercrime-related offenses in 2025. The arrest of the suspect in Casablanca is a testament to the ongoing vigilance of Moroccan law enforcement in safeguarding public order and protecting citizens from the dangers of online incitement.
