Libreville, Gabon — On July 17, 2026, Niger’s President General Abdourahamane Tiani became the first citizen to enroll in the Sahel Alliance States (AES) biometric passport program.
The enrollment, which took place at the Presidential Palace in Niamey, signifies Niger’s transition to digital travel documents in line with the AES member states’harmonization efforts.
The AES biometric passports, compliant with the Treaty creating the Sahel States Confederation, are a result of collaborative work between the Nigerien Direction of Territory Surveillance and Al Itissal Al Jadeed, a partner in implementing the new passport system.
The security of these passports has been enhanced with specific elements tailored to Niger, bringing the country to a total of five types of passports within the AES framework. These include the standard green passport, service blue passport, diplomatic red passport, Hadja passport for pilgrimage, and the refugee travel document, all adhering to international humanitarian standards.
The initiative is seen as a move to bolster national sovereignty and security against contemporary threats like document forgery and identity theft. President Tiani’s enrollment is a milestone in Niger’s digital transformation and a demonstration of the country’s commitment to regional integration.
The new passports are expected to improve border control and facilitate travel within the AES member states. While concerns may arise regarding the cost and implementation of the technology, the enrollment of the president underscores the government’s dedication to modernizing national identity documents and enhancing national security.
As the program evolves, it will be crucial to monitor its implementation and ensure accessibility and affordability for all citizens, particularly those in remote areas.
