Abuja, Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Terrance Michael Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis have agreed to appoint special envoys to deepen their nations’bilateral engagement and foster broader cooperation within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This decision was announced after a meeting at the State House in Abuja, where the leaders discussed existing collaborations and explored new avenues for strategic partnership.
The appointment of special envoys in both Abuja and Basseterre is intended to bolster institutional support for ongoing agreements and to expand collaborative efforts between Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the wider African and Caribbean regions. Prime Minister Drew praised President Tinubu’s leadership and dedication to strengthening Africa-Caribbean relations.
The agreement signifies a move from symbolic diplomacy to a more structured and outcome — oriented approach in Nigeria’s engagement with the Caribbean. The historical and cultural connections between the two nations were highlighted, with Drew noting the significant Nigerian ancestry of many Saint Kitts and Nevis citizens, particularly from the Calabar region.
Discussions also covered areas such as cultural exchange, education, agriculture, and food security. Nigerian-trained professionals have been instrumental in the development of Saint Kitts and Nevis, with many Nigerian graduates now serving as doctors in the country. The establishment of special envoys is expected to enhance these collaborations and deliver tangible benefits to both nations and the broader CARICOM and African continent.
