Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has undertaken a comprehensive initiative to address the circulation of unsafe consumer products in Nigeria, as announced by its Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive, Mr. Tunji Bello.
At the recent World Consumer Rights Day 2026 commemorations in Abuja, Bello highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration between the FCCPC and various sector regulators, as well as the national standards body. The emphasis is on improving market surveillance and reinforcing product testing across critical sectors.
Bello pointed out that the campaign against unsafe products is multifaceted, stemming from issues such as weak internal controls and gaps in compliance culture. In some cases, there is evidence of deliberate neglect of legal and regulatory obligations, which poses immediate risks to consumers and erodes market trust.
These efforts are part of the broader economic reform program under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which focuses on fortifying market integrity and bolstering consumer confidence. The FCCPC is committed to upholding the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, ensuring that consumers have access to safe, durable, and suitable goods.
The FCCPC is working in tandem with organizations like the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to guarantee product safety throughout the supply chain. Bello also recognized the role of the media in fostering informed consumer choices and public accountability.
In conclusion, the FCCPC is dedicated to protecting consumer rights and fostering fair market practices, urging consumers to stay informed and vigilant, especially when making purchases.
