Deputy Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali “Salah “convened a critical humanitarian forum in Somalia to address the ongoing drought crisis. The event, which took place in the capital Mogadishu, was attended by senior representatives from the United Nations, aiming to coordinate efforts in providing relief to the affected populations.
Salah emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The drought has caused unprecedented hardship, and it is imperative that we act swiftly and efficiently to mitigate its impact.”The forum aimed to identify immediate needs, discuss long-term strategies, and allocate resources to areas most affected by the drought.
The meeting highlighted the plight of millions of Somalis who have been affected by the severe water and food shortages. According to the UN, over 5 million people are facing acute food insecurity, with the risk of famine looming in some regions.
Senior UN representative, Fatoumata Lejeune — Kaba, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, noting, “We are committed to supporting the Somali government and its people in their efforts to combat this crisis.”The forum also discussed the need for international aid and cooperation to address the drought effectively.
The Somali government has already taken several measures to tackle the drought, including the distribution of food aid and the drilling of boreholes to provide water to affected communities. However, more resources and international support are needed to address the long-term consequences of the drought.
