Mogadishu, Somalia — The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean is appealing for $6. 42 million to sustain health and nutrition interventions across Somalia, Sudan, and Djibouti, as part of its broader $25. 4 million response to the Greater Horn of Africa (GHoA) Food Insecurity and Health Crisis.
The appeal targets critical primary healthcare and nutrition services, which are crucial in mitigating the impacts of acute food insecurity and malnutrition.
In Somalia, over 6. 5 million people face Crisis or worse levels of food insecurity, with 1. 8 million children at risk of acute malnutrition.
The closure of over 200 health facilities due to funding shortages has further limited access to essential healthcare services.
The WHO’s funding request will enable the continuation of lifesaving interventions, including maintaining outbreak detection and response capacities, expanding nutrition screening, and supporting treatment and referral pathways at stabilization centers. It will also strengthen community engagement and pre-position essential medicines, diagnostics, and therapeutic supplies.
The situation is severe, with recurrent outbreaks of cholera, measles, malaria, and other communicable diseases placing additional pressure on the region’s already fragile health systems. Conflicts and displacement exacerbate these challenges, making the need for immediate international funding critical.
The WHO is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and partners to manage severe acute malnutrition through nutrition stabilization centers and deploying mobile health teams.
The organization also focuses on strengthening disease surveillance, frontline health worker capacity, and pre — positioning essential medicines and cholera supplies.
The appeal for funding is a call to action to ensure that the health and nutrition needs of the affected populations are met, preventing preventable deaths and accelerating disease transmission.
