Kampala, Uganda — In the first half of 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed over US$10 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) to combat 12 health emergencies across the globe. This fund has been pivotal in providing immediate financial support to address disease outbreaks, complex crises, and natural disasters, particularly in regions such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
The CFE has been instrumental in filling critical gaps in emergency response funding, such as the distribution of emergency medical supplies and the sustenance of essential health services following natural disasters, such as Mozambique’s devastating flooding earlier this year. Despite these successes, the CFE’s balance is critically low, emphasizing the urgent need for continued support to ensure the WHO can respond swiftly to future health emergencies. To date, twelve Member States and the UN Foundation have contributed over US$17 million to the CFE, yet the fund’s financial challenges persist.
In the DRC, the CFE supported the government’s response to the Ebola outbreak, while in Uganda, it played a significant role in combating infectious disease outbreaks, including Ebola, Mpox, Measles, Anthrax, and Yellow Fever.
The WHO has highlighted the importance of strengthening the CFE’s resources to enhance its capacity to respond to global health emergencies, noting that the fund’s low balance could impede the organization’s ability to provide timely and effective support in the face of future crises.
As health emergencies continue to rise worldwide, the WHO’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies underscores the critical need for rapid financial support. Its current financial strain underscores the necessity for sustained support from Member States and stakeholders to ensure the fund’s effectiveness and sustainability in the years ahead.
