Cameroon’s Agro-Industrial Transformation: AfDB Approves 53. 3B FCFA Irrigation Loan BODY: Kinshasa, DRC – The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a substantial loan of 53. 3 billion FCFA for Cameroon’s Northern Agro-Industrial Development Program (PDAS-1).
The program is set to transform 618 hectares of land in the North region, with a focus on constructing three small dams and improving irrigation facilities. This loan, which includes an AfDB contribution of 81. 2 million euros (approximately 53.
3 billion FCFA) and an expected state contribution of 7. 54 million euros (or nearly 4. 95 billion FCFA), marks the first phase of the PDAS-1, with an overall cost of 88.
74 million euros (about 58. 2 billion FCFA).
The project is aimed at supporting agro — sylvopastoral activities, particularly in Barkehi, a commune in the North region, and aims to maintain producer and livestock activities during the dry season.
Additionally, it is intended to enhance the availability of water for cattle rearing, fishing development, and to potentially provide potable water to nearby communities.
As part of the program, a study has been initiated to evaluate water storage needs, existing infrastructure, and feasible technical solutions.
The Cameroonian government’s commitment to infrastructure development and agricultural transformation could significantly bolster the country’s food security and economic resilience.
However, the project faces challenges, with the risk of losing nearly 292 billion FCFA of approved funding due to potential delays in agreement signing or project commencement. Ensuring the successful execution of such large-scale projects will depend on efficient project management and timely implementation.
The AfDB’s support for the project underscores its role as a key financier of development projects in Africa, aiming to stimulate economic growth and support agro-industrial development across the continent.
The success of PDAS — 1 is not only of interest to the Cameroonian government but also to the international community, as it could set a precedent for future regional development endeavors.
