Bamako, Mali — July 24, 2026 The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has provided an operational update for Mali, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis amidst significant population movements and pressure on basic services in hosting areas. Between the end of May and mid-June, there was a notable influx of refugees in the Koro region, further intensifying the need for assistance and protection.
The UNHCR, in collaboration with partners, has been implementing a multisectoral response to support refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and host communities.
The interventions have focused on enhancing protection, registration and documentation, education, health, livelihoods, and sustainable solutions.
The continuation of biometric registration operations and the distribution of thousands of refugee identity cards have improved access to rights and essential services.
However, the needs for protection of children and women remain substantial. Recreational and psychosocial activities have provided safe spaces for over a thousand children affected by displacement, while efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence have been strengthened through survivor care and community awareness initiatives.
The current situation in Mali underscores the importance of addressing the complex needs of the affected populations.
The UNHCR’s report indicates that despite the ongoing challenges, the agency and its partners are committed to providing comprehensive support.
