Nigeria has concluded its fifth and final repatriation flight from South Africa, bringing back a total of 1,490 citizens amid ongoing xenophobic violence and anti-immigration protests.
The last flight, operated by Air Peace, landed in Lagos with 305 individuals aboard. This coordinated effort by the Nigerian government, in conjunction with South African authorities, aimed to facilitate the safe return of Nigerian nationals affected by the unrest that has gripped the region.
The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa confirmed the repatriation of an additional 586 Nigerian nationals who were found to be residing in the country illegally. Emergency Travel Documents were issued to all those affected to enable their return to Nigeria. Xenophobic attacks have repeatedly targeted foreign-owned businesses and individuals, necessitating evacuation and repatriation measures.
The Nigerian government has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens and addressing the adverse conditions they faced in South Africa. Anti-immigrant sentiment in South Africa, fueled by concerns over unemployment, crime, and public services, has led to a rise in violence against foreign nationals. This has garnered international concern and calls for dialogue and calm from entities like the United Nations and the African Union.
The attacks, which have claimed at least four lives, have prompted the Nigerian government to engage closely with South African authorities to not only ensure the safe return of citizens but also to tackle the root causes of the violence.
As the repatriation process draws to a close, the Nigerian government will continue to monitor the situation and provide support to its citizens. This incident highlights the broader challenges faced by African immigrants in South Africa and underscores the need for regional cooperation in addressing the complex issue of xenophobia.
